Meningitis is an infection and inflammation of the fluid and membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, known as meninges. This condition can be life-threatening and requires immediate medical attention. The symptoms often resemble those of the flu but can escalate rapidly.
Types: viral and bacterial meningitis. Causes:
- Viral Meningitis: Usually caused by viruses such as enteroviruses, herpes simplex, and varicella zoster. These viruses can spread through coughing, sneezing, close contact, or contaminated surfaces.
- Bacterial Meningitis: Caused by bacteria like meningococcal, pneumococcal, and Haemophilus influenzae. These bacteria can spread through respiratory secretions, like sneezing or kissing .
Symptoms:
- Both types share similar symptoms, including fever, headache, neck stiffness, nausea, and sensitivity to light. However, bacterial meningitis can cause more severe symptoms like seizures, confusion, and limb pain.
- Viral Meningitis: Often presents with symptoms like chills, double vision, and difficulty focusing. In infants, look for signs like bulging soft spots on the head, irritability, and lethargy.
- Bacterial Meningitis: Can cause rapid progression of symptoms, including severe headache, stiff neck, and confusion. It's a medical emergency that requires immediate attention.
Treatment and Outcome:
- Viral Meningitis: Usually resolves on its own, but antiviral medications may be prescribed for specific viruses like herpes simplex. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms and supporting the body's recovery.
- Bacterial Meningitis: Requires immediate antibiotic treatment to prevent long-term complications or death. Delayed treatment can lead to serious consequences, including paralysis, stroke, or even death .
Risk Factors:
- Both types can affect anyone, but certain groups are more susceptible:
- Viral Meningitis: Young children under 5, people with weakened immune systems, and those living in group settings. - Bacterial Meningitis: Children under 2, teenagers, young adults, and people with certain medical conditions or weakened immune systems
